How to Spot Fake Chinese Toys: An Authenticity Checklist
Bootlegs are everywhere. Here's how to verify your Chinese toys are genuine before you buy — holograms, QR codes, paint quality, and packaging tells.

## The Bootleg Problem
Counterfeit Chinese toys are a multi-million dollar problem. The same factories that produce authentic figures sometimes run unauthorized "third shifts" — same molds, cheaper materials, no quality control. On marketplaces like AliExpress, Shopee, and even Amazon, bootlegs outnumber genuine products 3 to 1 for popular lines.
This guide covers the five verification methods that actually work.
### 1. The Holographic Sticker
Every legitimate Chinese mecha kit and blind box comes with a holographic anti-counterfeit sticker. Here's what to check:
- **Tilt test**: A real hologram shifts between at least 3 colors when tilted. Bootlegs use static foil stickers that look shiny but don't shift.
- **Micro-printing**: Use your phone camera at 10x zoom. Real holograms have the brand name repeated in micro-text along the edge. Bootlegs have a blurry line.
- **Scratch-off layer**: Pop Mart, 52TOYS, and MoDongQi all use stickers with a scratch-off QR code underneath. If the QR code is printed on top (not scratch-off), it's fake.
### 2. QR Code Verification
All major Chinese brands have QR code verification systems:
- **Pop Mart**: Scan the QR code on the box. It should take you to the official Pop Mart verification page and show a first-time verification timestamp. If it says "verified 15 times" — that box has been opened and resealed.
- **MoDongQi / Motor Nuclear**: QR code links to the brand's WeChat mini-program. You need the WeChat app to verify. The verification page shows the exact product name, production batch, and factory date. Cross-reference with the stamp on the manual.
- **52TOYS**: Uses a dual-code system. Outer box code verifies the case; inner figure code verifies the individual item. Both must match.
### 3. The Paint Test
Bootleg paint jobs are consistently worse in three specific ways:
- **Gold/metallic paint**: Real figures use metallic pigment (actual metal particles). Bootlegs use yellow/brown pigment with glitter. Under a flashlight, real metallic paint sparkles with tiny reflective dots; bootleg metallic is a uniform muddy color.
- **Panel lines**: Real panel lines are crisp and consistent width (0.2-0.3mm). Bootleg panel lines are thicker, wobbly, and often bleed outside the groove.
- **Face printing**: This is where bootlegs always fail. Real figures use tampography (pad printing) for faces — each color applied separately with micron-level precision. Bootlegs use inkjet-style printing where you can see the dot matrix pattern under magnification.
### 4. Packaging Tells
Authentic packaging has specific giveaways that bootleggers rarely replicate:
- **Box texture**: MoDongQi boxes have a subtle linen texture on the outer surface. Bootlegs use smooth cardboard.
- **Inner tray color**: Pop Mart uses specific Pantone-matched tray colors for each series. Dimoo trays are always Pantone 2905C (light blue). Bootlegs use whatever gray/black plastic is cheapest.
- **Manual paper weight**: Real instruction manuals use 120gsm coated paper. Bootleg manuals feel like newsprint — thinner, rougher, and the ink smudges when rubbed.
### 5. Price Is a Signal, Not Proof
A $90 MoDongQi kit selling for $29 on AliExpress is obviously fake. But bootleggers have gotten smarter — many now price fakes at 70-80% of retail to appear "discounted but plausible."
The red flag isn't the price itself; it's the **seller**. Check:
- Does the seller have 50+ reviews with photos?
- Are they an authorized distributor listed on the brand's website?
- Is the store less than 6 months old?
### What to Do If You Got a Fake
If you bought through our store: contact us immediately. We'll replace it and use the counterfeit for our authenticity training program.
If you bought elsewhere: file a dispute with the platform. Most marketplaces (eBay, AliExpress) side with buyers in counterfeit cases. Take photos of the hologram, QR verification result, and paint quality before filing.
