Shipping Toys from China: What Collectors Need to Know in 2026
Customs fees, packaging standards, carrier choices, and insurance — everything you need to know before ordering Chinese toys for international delivery.
The Shipping Reality
You found the perfect figure. You paid. Now it has to survive a 10,000km journey through cargo planes, sorting facilities, customs inspections, and last-mile delivery. Here's what actually happens to your package — and how to make sure it arrives intact.
Packaging: Double-Box Is Non-Negotiable
Single-box shipping is gambling. Here's the standard we use, and what you should demand from any seller shipping internationally:
- Outer box: Rigid corrugated cardboard (minimum 3-wall B-flute). Crush-proof corners.
- Foam layer: 2cm polyethylene foam on all six sides. Not bubble wrap — foam. Bubble wrap pops under sustained pressure; foam absorbs impact.
- Inner box: The original product box, wrapped in a sealed plastic bag (moisture barrier).
- Box-in-box gap: Minimum 3cm on all sides between inner and outer box. Any less and impact transfers directly to the product.
Why this matters: packages in international transit get stacked, dropped from conveyor belts, and vibrated for hours in truck beds. A single cardboard box transfers every impact to the figure inside. Double-boxing creates a crumple zone.
Customs and Duties by Region
Import duties are the buyer's responsibility — that's standard for all international e-commerce. Here's what to expect:
| Region | Duty Threshold | Typical Rate |
|---|---|---|
| USA | Orders over $800 | 0-6.5% (toys are often duty-free) |
| EU | All orders | 20-25% VAT + 0-4.5% duty |
| UK | Orders over £135 | 20% VAT + 0-4% duty |
| Canada | Orders over CAD$20 | 5-13% GST/HST + 0-6.5% duty |
| Australia | Orders over AUD$1000 | 10% GST + 0-5% duty |
| Japan | Orders over ¥16,666 | 10% consumption tax |
Pro tip for EU/UK buyers: Our packages are declared with accurate HS codes (9503.00 for toys/models). Some sellers under-declare value to reduce your duties — this is customs fraud and can result in your package being seized. We declare the actual purchase price. Every time.
Choosing a Carrier
| Carrier | Speed | Tracking | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yanwen / 4PX | 12-25 days | Basic | Budget shipping, non-urgent |
| China Post EMS | 7-15 days | Good | Mid-range, reliable |
| DHL / FedEx | 3-7 days | Excellent | Urgent, expensive items |
| UPS Worldwide | 5-9 days | Excellent | US/Canada destinations |
Yanwen and 4PX are the cheapest but tracking updates are sparse — you'll see "departed origin country" and then radio silence for 10 days until "arrived at destination country." Don't panic. This is normal.
Insurance: When It's Worth It
Our shipments include basic liability coverage (up to $50). For orders over $100, we recommend adding shipping insurance at checkout (2-3% of order value).
Insurance covers: lost packages, total damage, theft. Insurance doesn't cover: minor box dents (collector-grade packaging already accounts for this), customs delays, incorrect address provided by buyer.
What to Do If Your Package Arrives Damaged
- Photograph everything: The outer box, the inner box, the damage, the shipping label. Take photos before opening the inner box if the outer box is damaged.
- Contact us within 48 hours: support@chinatoyguite.com with your order number and photos.
- Don't throw anything away: Keep all packaging until the claim is resolved. The carrier may want to inspect it.
- We ship the replacement: Once we confirm the damage, a replacement ships within 2 business days. You don't wait for the claim to process.
Why Shipping Takes "So Long"
A 10-15 day estimate isn't a guarantee. Your package passes through: origin sorting center → export customs → international flight → import customs → destination sorting center → local delivery. Each step can add 1-3 days. During peak seasons (November-December, Chinese New Year in January-February), add 5-10 days to all estimates.
We ship from our Guangzhou warehouse. The port is 2 hours away. Most delays happen at the destination country's customs, not in China.
